Observing the playful interactions with building blocks to a profound love for the arrangement of architectural elements, their journey unfolds. The perspective fixated on the outside world through a window has transformed into a nuanced appreciation for the language spoken by built spaces. This transformation seamlessly integrates the scenic view into the fabric of architectural design, and their experiences within buildings and spaces have become a rich source of learning.

The Hoysaleshwara Temple in Karnataka, erected during the Hoysala empire, became a pivotal moment in their architectural journey. The exterior, adorned with intricately sculpted soapstone meticulously depicting Hindu theology, left an indelible mark. The craftsmanship, executed in an era devoid of technological advancements, became a source of awe. The friezes, narrating Hindu epics such as the Ramayana, the Mahabharatham, and the Bhagavatha Puranas, along with other Puranas, served as a testament to the unparalleled skills of the artisans, compelling them to ponder the dedication and time invested in such creations.

From that transformative moment, architecture ceased to be a mere backdrop; it became a realm of endless opportunities, urging them to explore, learn, and seek new horizons.

As a Utilitarian:

In the earlier chapters of their life, architecture was perceived as a necessity, serving as a backdrop to the utilitarian routine. However, as time unfolded, their perspective underwent a transformative shift. No longer relegated to a mere utilitarian function, structures became protagonists, weaving narratives of the utilitarian’s experiences. They began to recognize architecture as a rich tapestry intricately entwined with their emotions, culture, and heritage.

Their journey into the world of architecture would dismantle these preconceptions, revealing a realm where technology isn’t the sole opportunity. Instead, age-old techniques, approached with both aesthetic and functional considerations, emerged as powerful contributors. Much like the unfolding of a narrative, architecture held the potential to create yet-to-be-explored possibilities—a realization that left an indelible mark on their evolving perspective.

The catalyst:

In the routine of their design hours, they serendipitously discovered the captivating realm of earth architecture. Time seemed to freeze as they contemplated the untapped potential of this sustainable gem. A sense of urgency and a desire to share this knowledge with others welled within them, lamenting that such a valuable technique remained unknown to many.

Their newfound passion extended beyond a mere construction method; it became a driving force in their approach to designing buildings. Influenced by the methodology of Laurie Baker, they began to consider the pros and cons of earth architecture, viewing it not just as a construction technique but as a means to contribute to the ecosystem.

Inspired by Baker’s principles, they envisioned a future where sustainable, cost-effective techniques could offer resilient homes for utilitarians of all statuses. The journey into earth architecture became a catalyst for a deeper understanding of design choices and their potential impact on creating a harmonious relationship between structures and the environment.

Participating in the tapestry:

From the outset, architecture appeared to them as a captivating novel, with each chapter unfolding the evolution and philosophies of architects. The journey took them from the iconic elegance of Greek Doric columns to witnessing Gaudi’s dream, the Sagrada Familia, being realized with the aid of modern machinery. In the tapestry of architectural marvels, they found narratives of human creativity inscribed in every structure.

As daylight colorfully illuminated the Gothic cathedrals, the architectural spectrum became a source of enlightenment for them. This journey not only deepened their appreciation for the aesthetic aspects but also guided them along a path revealing the indispensable role of architecture in every conceivable form of workmanship. The realization dawned that, whether directly or indirectly, architecture served as the silent orchestrator shaping the stage for various creative endeavors.

Exploring Horizons:

Embarking on explorations of diverse architectural styles guided by luminaries like B.V. Doshi and Zaha Hadid, they found inspiration that served as guiding stars, creating a kaleidoscope of possibilities.

Quoting Zaha Hadid’s perspective, “There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?”

became a mantra, encouraging them to embrace a multitude of architectural styles. These diverse explorations manifested in residential spaces, where Chettinad principles seamlessly blended with contemporary homes, and rugs from various corners of the world adorned walls as symbols of respect for creators.

A vivid representation of this exploration was witnessed at the Mexico Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai, themed ‘Tejiendo Vidas’ or ‘Weaving Lives.’ Symbolizing the Monarch butterfly, the pavilion offered a sensory experience enriched by souvenirs crafted by a community of female artisans from Jalisco. This diverse architectural showcase became a window into different epochs and cultures, imprinting upon them the idea that architecture serves as a living testament to the ever-evolving dialogue between humanity and its surroundings.

Urban community engagement:

In the journey from a casual observer to an avid admirer of architecture, they continuously shift their life’s lens. Exploring how spaces intertwine with diverse emotions, streets emerge as dynamic stages representing the profound impact of collective community participation on overall well-being.

Their passion deepens through live sketching, where observations trigger a constant brainstorming process. They seek solutions to urban community challenges, aiming to enhance the enjoyment of urban spaces. Architecture becomes a lens through which they learn to appreciate the beauty woven into mundane moments, transforming them into opportunities.

The unseen yet local issues hindering urban community engagement become a canvas for thoughtful design. For them, architecture is more than a subject of study; it is a transformative force. Breathing intention into both personal and professional pursuits shapes their perception and fuels a commitment to addressing local challenges with the beauty of design.

Much like a child learning a language, they once saw bricks and mortar as the building blocks of a new understanding. Architecture has become a nurturing guide, holding their hands as they learn to read and write the sentences of built spaces. In this analogy, architecture is likened to a mother, trusted to help their architectural journey evolve into a poetic dance, narrating stories to the world and beyond.

As they trace their hands on the tapestry of architectural marvels, an indelible imprint of architectural wisdom is carried with them—a testament to the potential held within architecture.

Their perspective extends beyond shaping physical spaces; it embraces the profound notion of shaping the very essence of living itself.
