ID origins is a mixed used rehabilitation project, created using undulating calligraphic strokes which harmoniously fuse the past and the present. The building’s location in Mumbai and the sentimental value the owners place on it both contribute to the project’s imminent significance.

The original building, which was constructed in the 1980s, served as the foundation for the clients’ initial business venture, therefore alluding to the name ID Origins. Twelve residential floors are constructed over the pre-existing six commercial floors, with a transfer girder between these two strata’s operating as a load transfer as well as auxiliary columns erected from the ground up.

Given the dichotomy of demands of the marked activities within this structure, the design looks at generating perforated screens on the commercial floors to reduce solar glare and provide optimum lux level. The calligraphic strokes gradually wane as they reach the upper residential floors, thereby maximising the panoramic views for the residential apartments, while outwardly maintaining their meandering curvature.

The new façade of the project provides an epicentre for the site, and acts as a distinct visual icon for the entrance to the overall site, which spans across 12 acres of land. In the concentrated urban fabric of Mumbai, ID Origins will be distinguishable from pedestrian as well as vehicular routes, making the site experience more perceptible.

This Urban revitalization of the site extends into the urban fabric by reorganising the entrances and exits to decongest the access road, raise the pedestrian walkways to the vicinity of the site, blurring the site boundary and fabricating an urban lobby which not only blends in, but also enhances the Mumbai streetscape, by reclaiming the skyline.

Due to the serpentine nature of the façade, it was crucial to rationalize it into panels that were easy to articulate for construction. The undulating geometry of the sinuous moves is planar in nature, with a V profile in plan. This was done to ensure that there were multiple options for materials and techniques to execute this design. Prototypical testing was done on site for GRC, FRP, ACP and finally CNC routed ACP panels were selected due to their light-weight and fire-rated properties. Construction time was reduced by 6 months as no moulds were required and thus, overall cost of construction was also greatly reduced.
