At 50 sqm and shaded in a north-facing position, this minimalist roof garden envelopes a unique modern Shoreditch penthouse perfectly renovated, fulfilling an important indoor-outdoor role within the residence. An Ipe hardwood deck & square grey granite pavers continue the interior floor with the same colours & patterns, alongside slatted privacy screens by the balustrade.

The decking laid on width increases depth, while the granite contrasts this longitude. Photos by Clive Nichols. Bamboo, round Box topiary, Libertia, Stipa grasses & trailing Honeysuckle create an entirely evergreen, sculptural outdoor space suited for the shaded aspect for optimum low maintenance for a busy owner.

Bespoke planters increase in scale from low curved red vases for grasses to floating recessed troughs for Bamboo, culminating in tall grey tapered pots for the topiary. Opulent Lighting, irrigation & a Dedon furniture set complete the scheme, providing year-round cosiness. Our client’s love of art, collecting pieces by Warhol and Hirst, drove the narrative. The client returned from the Far East bringing beautiful terracotta Buddhas, for which we built elegant plinths, lit by LED’s. The largest Buddha is flanked by 2 sets of 3 tall planters with Box balls.

The large open-plan apartment features arching steel ceiling beams, their shape echoed by 4 low curved red vases. The monochrome tones of the adjoining kitchen were echoed in our powder-coating tints for the troughs & topiary planters.

Lighting plays a major role, where both interior & exterior elements augment each other, facilitating night use for the client who mostly uses the rooftop after dusk. This ambience is beneficial during winter, when illuminating the residence via floor-to-ceiling glass.
