“Your brand is the single most important investment you can make in your business.” This quote by Steve Forbes sums up the role that branding plays when it comes to impacting one’s business. Branding has been seen as a relevant and indispensable concept when it comes to the product market, however, it stands equally applicable to the industry of interior design. Creating a brand identity that resonates with the audience, a strong online presence and a unique design style can elevate one’s interior design firm and multiply the revenue. Branding creates a sense of credibility, trust, and accountability and facilitates one to broaden their customer base while building customer loyalty.

Creating an Experience

A brand is not just about its visuals and presentability to the audience- it is about creating an experience for the client. In terms of interior design, brand experience physically manifests itself in the form of spaces, interactions, and the overall journey of a client. From the very first moment a client walks into the firm, they form an impression of the brand. Starting from the first interaction to the completion of the project and handover, the brand experience leaves a long-lasting impact on the client.

A positive and unique brand experience builds customer loyalty and expands the scope for further referrals. It is imperative that the brand narrative connects to the clientele and reflects in the brand philosophy. Several factors drive the rise of interior branding which is an increasingly competitive market that is forcing businesses to stand out from others, consumers who are driven by the experience are actively seeking unique and memorable interactions with brands (Pinson, 2021).

An Effective Brand Identity

The visual identity of a brand defines the first impression that it has on the clients. It plays a vital role in influencing one’s perception of the brand and is an indispensable tool for a new brand, trying to create its niche in a highly competitive industry. When a client approaches an interior design firm, they look for one with credibility, one that can be trusted to design the project of their dreams.

An effective brand identity can facilitate the interior design firm to leave a lasting impact, interact with a broader audience, and elevate the reputation of the firm. Creating an effective brand identity involves multiple elements like the logo, typography, and color palette. It further expands into defining one’s target audience, building the brand narrative that resonates with the audience, and coming up with adequate marketing strategies to put the brand out there for everyone to notice. Brand identity helps create relationships between the company and consumers (Fournier, 1998), and can lead to perceptions of brand personality. (Aaker, 1997; Aaker, Fournier, & Brasel, 2004).

A distinct style or versatility?

For the longest time, designers have been told to develop their unique style, something that stands out in the crowd. However, over time, some interior designers tend to develop a signature style with repetitive use of elements or similar color palettes being used across multiple projects. This can restrict the scope of broadening your client base and hinder the ability of the brand to showcase versatility. While creating a distinct design style is important to create your niche in an industry with limitless competition, it is important to keep experimenting and trying out a unique array of projects to add to the portfolio. The branding and marketing of the firm should similarly reflect a unique yet versatile approach. Putting one’s brand out there, and collaborating with other brands and influencers is vital, however, a brand should make sure that they do not lose their brand essence and authenticity to ensure that the clients continue to feel connected to the brand.

Branding can also help the firm to highlight its unique selling points and showcase its design styles. The unique selling points can be what distinguishes the firm from the other competition in the market. This can range from specializing in sustainable design to luxury or retail design. The brand identity then further facilitates the firm in attracting the right clientele. It acts as a filter and clearly conveys the design philosophy and narrative of the firm.

Branding is an effective tool for all interior designer firms, from ones that are just starting and trying to carve out their niche to established firms that want to broaden their client base and multiply revenue. It facilitates a firm to stand out from the competition, broaden its client base, and attract the right type of clients that align with its brand philosophy. It facilitates word-of-mouth through positive brand experiences and boosts the visibility of the firm in addition to conveying it as credible. Branding is not just limited to the social media presence or the marketing strategies being adopted by the firm, it’s about how clients perceive the brand, what qualities they associate with it, and lastly, the connection that they feel.
