Art history knows Panayiotis Tetsis as one of its esteemed luminaries. His journey through to this hallowed status was as groundbreaking as the art for which he eventually became known—alternative expressionism, figurative painting, seascapes were his signature. His influences are expertly sowed into his vast and significant oeuvre, with the threads visible enough for study and enlightenment. Panayiotis Tetsis’ almost deity-like standing in art history today is one deeply rooted. As a native of Greece, the very being that formed was knee-deep in the rich Grecian culture, history, mythology, and, of course, classical arts. An illustrious career riding on the ever-steady tide of academics and mentors in addition to the requisite for any great artist traversing them: their brush dipped, at times, to their cloth to add the necessary color when the gaze of expressionism and unorthodox paint-strokes says more than the paint itself representing his individualist vision. There are only so many poses that the human frame can strike, but Panayiotis has been sure to deliver each with the maximum amount of style and originality permissible. His interpretation of the figure, alongside those that inspired him, is simply iconic and, thanks to his pinpoint recognition of the human form, complete of recondite layers that have universal warmth coursing through its veins. And then there is his other sweetheart: marine landscapes, whose varying moods he encapsulates so beautifully in his painting. The metaphor of the sea—of its beauty, possible depths of depth, and concealed crests of danger—communicates perfectly briefly that which, in real-time, takes forever to explain.

Early life and influences

Panayiotis’s life began on the beautiful island of Hydra, a Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, in the year 1925. He has always been surrounded by the natural scenes of the rocky landscape of the island, the brilliant blue sea, and the vibrant colors of the houses, which gave him his first taste of ideas. After having taken part in painting classes at a young age, his professional career commenced in 1943. Indeed, he had been accepted into the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he would increase his knowledge about painting thanks to the teaching of notable Greek painters. It was for him an opportunity to demonstrate his expertise and savoir-faire. By combining his traditional influence and modernism, he showed his comprehension of art. He later got accepted into les École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Contribution to Expressionism

Tetsis made a contribution to the Expressionist movement embarking on an artistic journey that pushed boundaries like never before. His drawings transcended the norm as he fearlessly embraced whatever they demanded of him. In the realm of expressionism Tetsis skillfully channeled his energy to convey his ideas in a manner. He wanted his paintings to possess life and vitality for if he merely desired something or someone static he could have taken a photograph instead. With every brushstroke, his subjects come alive their faces and expressions evolving with each viewer’s interpretation.
