After a few of its successful editions, in 2015, the festival expanded its scope to include urban planning, landscape design, and interior design. This edition was held at the Marina Bay Sands complex in Singapore.
Since then, the festival’s later editions were held in Germany, the Netherlands, and Portugal.
The festival’s editions have been ever-evolving through the years, expanding its program to include keynote speeches, exhibitions, workshops, and networking opportunities. It is now one of the most influential architectural events globally, attracting architects, designers, and industry professionals from around the world.
Events & Knowledge Exchange
There are many events conducted that promote collaboration, innovation and disseminate knowledge at the festival. The WAF hosts annual award programs where a team of qualified judges present and assess the shortlisted projects, providing a platform to discuss design philosophies.
The festival features exhibitions & competitions for architectural models, artworks in varied mediums, and innovative design concepts fostering an engaging environment for constructive conversations over new ideas and visions. There is also an event for project presentations where the participants can showcase their design projects, and further elaborate on the development experiences, challenges faced, and lessons learned in the process. It encourages curiosity and dialogue among peers and offers valuable insights for the different professionals in the industry.
The festival also promotes beneficial engagement by conducting conferences, workshops, and masterclasses. These sessions provide a platform for the participants to engage in hands-on learning, explore specific topics in detail, and share experiences in an interactive setting. It also encourages discussions on the latest trends, innovations, and practices in architecture and urban development.
Sustainability at WAF
Focusing on the aspect of Sustainability, it reflects the growing importance of environmentally conscious design practices in the field of architecture. It promotes and celebrates sustainable design as an integral part of contemporary architecture. The aim is to inspire and encourage architects to incorporate sustainable principles in their projects contributing to a more environmentally conscious and sustainable built environment.
The design discussions largely focus on the environmental performance of the designs, including energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, water conservation, integration with the natural environment, and consideration of the project’s life cycle impact. This encourages the adoption of sustainable principles in architectural practices.
The organization believes in an action-leading approach to a sustainable way of life. The event is also used as an example of how the industry can reduce its carbon footprint. This year’s event which is hosted at Marina Sands Bay is a carbon-neutral event venue. The trophies for the event have also undergone minimal carbon usage regarding the material and process.
The event organizers have also made mindful decisions of deliberating with the event suppliers to use sustainable materials, recyclable alternatives, and modular structures, and encourage sustainable promotional items.
Significance of a New Location Every Year
The event’s location is rotated annually because it fosters a more inclusive and diverse platform, promotes global architectural exchange, and highlights the unique characteristics of each region’s architecture.
Hosting the festival in different cities provides an opportunity for the host city to showcase local architecture, and design accomplishments, encouraging a deeper understanding of the regional contexts and promoting cultural diversity. It is observed that most of the host cities are those which have recognition for excellence in architectural marvels, visionary design, and technological innovation.
The rotation allows the professionals to learn from each other as it offers an exchange of diverse architectural practices, urban environments, and design approaches. It allows visitors from different parts of the world to attend and participate thereby enhancing the international profile of the host city’s architectural community. It provides economic benefits to the host city, leading to increased tourism during the event period, hotel bookings, and revenue generation for local businesses.
All of this helps in promoting a global perspective on architecture and creates a platform for cultural exchange and networking.
