11. CARPENTER CENTER FOR VISUAL ARTS

Location- Cambridge, MA, USA
Project Year- 1963
Typology- Institute

One of the oldest buildings in the States, designed by Le Corbusier, is located on the Harvard University’s campus. This modernist structure houses large open spaces for the students to work and showcase their art. A synthesis of art and architecture, the building takes on a less traditional approach to the design and organization of the interior spaces. It has the typical beton-brut concrete works which were implicated in tot the facade system. It basically appears to be an inverted version of Villa Savoye embodying the five points of architecture on the exterior rather than the interior. The Carpenter Center exemplifies that push and advancement in Corbusier’s work that would influence the modernist aesthetic and future styles.

14. INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Location- Boston, MA, USA
Project Year- 2006
Typology- Museum

A new harborside icon, a poetic waterfront gathering place, the ICA is designed with critical sensibility which embodies materiality and assembly, decidedly architecture-for-art. The waterfront structure is a great asset for the museum and a distraction from its inwardly focused surroundings. The entry is covered under the belly of the theatre and revealed as a panorama at the crossover gallery. The cantilever edits the context from view, leaving only the texture of water, a box-like shape wrapped on three sides with glass.. At night, its backlit surface glows like a lantern on the harbor’s edge.
