Hafeez Contractor in 2026: Designer of India’s Tallest Completed Building

In February 2026, the Minerva Tower in Mumbai officially became India’s tallest completed building — and it carries the signature of Architect Hafeez Contractor. Rising 301 metres over 91 storeys beside the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, the dual-tower residential scheme holds 362 apartments above a shared podium and was delivered under Mumbai’s Slum Redevelopment Policy, with ten housing blocks rehousing existing residents on the 2.6-hectare site before the tower could rise. The only taller structure in the country, the 320-metre Palais Royale, remains under construction, so the record consolidates a run that has defined Contractor’s career: his Imperial Tower I (254 m) was India’s tallest residential building from 2010 to 2017, and The 42 in Kolkata (260 m) briefly held the national height title in 2018–19.

Beyond the skyline race, the firm’s current slate stretches from the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat — cleared by the Union Cabinet in October 2024 and now under construction — to continuing campus work for institutions like BITS Pilani, whose Goa campus completed in 2023. Now in his mid-seventies, Contractor still leads one of India’s largest architectural practices from Mumbai.
