If you’re trying to grow on your Twitter (X), it can be daunting. It feels like so many users get featured on Twitter’s For You algorithm, while your post only gets a handful of likes. What are they doing differently?

This post hopes to get you the most Twitter likes possible by offering you advice that can get you more likes.

Make Tweets That Spark Discussion

We’re going to say it: Twitter’s been a hub of controversy for a while now. Everyone is dropping their “Hot takes” about current issues or even lesser-staked issues such as food. If you want to grow on Twitter, drop your spiciest take, and don’t be afraid to defend it in the comments. With that said, you should never alienate your audience or get too controversial, especially if you have a brand. But a bit of controversy helps on the platform.

Talk About What’s Trending

Twitter is about “What’s happening.” If you want your posts to get more likes and reposts, you’ll want to see what’s trending. Twitter has various trending tabs, but the main two are what’s trending overall and what’s personalized to you.

Personalized trending topics may center around your niche or your target audience. If you make posts based on what’s trending, they will get more likes. Not only that, but the people who like and repost your content will be more likely to be part of your target audience.

Post at the Right Times

X is a platform where the newest content gets the most attention. However, the new content needs to have an audience to view it. If you post when your target audience is in bed or when they’re working, you may not get that many likes or retweets.

Twitter allows you to schedule posts, so you should experiment with different times to see what works best for you. Your analytics can help you figure out when your audience is the most active.

Have CTAs in Your Tweets

Telling someone to like or repost seems a little desperate, but it works. For example, you can make a photo telling users, “Repost if you love pizza” or some other silly thing, and people will repost it. It’s a weird way to hack the human brain.

Retweet Old Content

If you’ve made a post and it hasn’t garnered the numbers you want, retweet it later. Retweeting posts can breathe new life into your old content by introducing it to an audience that did not see it beforehand. This is especially true if the post is old and you have a bigger audience since then.

Consider Getting X Premium

X Premium (Formally Twitter Blue) gives you a blue check on your name. This premium subscription can also prioritize your posts in the algorithm and replies. X is becoming a platform increasingly reliant on subscriptions, so you may need to pay some money. This doesn’t mean you can’t grow without Premium, but it does help.

Don’t Post Links In Your Posts

Recently, Elon Musk confirmed something that many users were suspicious of: posts with links get throttled in the algorithm. This revelation is frustrating to users who want to promote their website or other products outside of X.

Having a link in your bio to direct people toward your website can help. Putting the link in the replies is another way to promote your products without the post getting throttled.

Use Hashtags and Keywords (But Don’t Go Too Overboard)

Twitter is still relying on hashtags and keywords, but they are iffy. Some users have reported the hashtags actually throttling the reach. When putting hashtags in your post, use one or two, but mainly focus on the keywords in your post. What words will people be trying to find your content? Put them in your post and see what happens.

Interaction is Key

Finally, we can’t stress enough the importance of interacting with your audience. Whether you have several followers or several hundred, reply to any message or comment you receive. Retaining an audience is just as important, and it can also lead to your posts showing up on your followers’ feeds more often.
