The mansion drew attention in the architectural world when it was sold for $57 million to renowned American rapper, fashion icon, and media mogul Kanye West in September 2021. Known for his extensive taste and constant experimentation, West had plans to remodel the mansion. However, it now stands abandoned in a gutted and barren condition.
The current state of this iconic mansion has sparked nationwide discussions and debates about how such significant architectural work has been abandoned and deteriorating.

I don’t believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind,” says Tadao Ando, the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect.
Ando is renowned for his minimalist concrete structures, characterised by geometric shapes and beautifully crafted spaces bathed in natural light. He strategically uses large windows, skylights, and open courtyards to create dynamic and evolving environments. This thoughtful use of light enhances the sensory experience, creating a play of shadows that adds depth and dimension to the interiors.
The architect’s philosophy is best captured in his words, “Such things as light and wind only have meaning when they are introduced inside a house in a form cut off from the outside world. I create architectural orders based on geometric shapes like squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. I strive to use the natural forces of the area where I am building to restore the unity between house and nature (light and wind) that was lost during the modernization of Japanese houses in the rapid growth of the fifties and sixties.”
His style is evident in his material choices, such as concrete, glass, and steel. These materials interact beautifully with natural light, reflecting and diffusing it to create a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The use of glass thins the line separating indoors and outdoors, fostering a strong connection with the surrounding environment.
Furthermore, Ando’s designs incorporate natural elements like water, greenery, and open spaces, ensuring that his buildings continuously respond to their surroundings.
In essence, Ando’s work demonstrates how the strategic incorporation of natural light and elements can transform architectural spaces, making them not just structures but immersive, living environments.
Completed in 2013, the house is built into a sloped seafront and raised on four concrete columns above the beach.
The compact lot, situated between two other homes, covers about 5,700 square feet from the road to the beach. The front faces a two-lane street frequented by local surfers and beach goers who enjoy the relatively wide public beach and its favourable waves.
The house features three levels, each with a distinct purpose. The lowest floor contains three ensuite guest bedrooms, while the middle-level houses public areas such as the living room, kitchen, and powder room. The top floor is reserved for the owner, with a penthouse-level bedroom suite and a rooftop oceanside terrace overlooking the crashing waves below. The interior decor, described as minimalist “yet warm” by Marmol Radziner, the architecture firm that collaborated with Ando on the house, complements the overall design.

The Malibu mansion was originally designed for Wall Street financier Richard Sachs, with local architecture studio Marmol Radziner serving as the executive architect and general contractor. In September 2021, Kanye West purchased the mansion for $57 million. Kanye envisioned the house to resemble a retro bomb shelter and initially approached Marmol Radziner to achieve this look. However, they could not meet his expectations. Consequently, Tony Saxon was brought in by Kanye’s wife, Bianca Censori. Saxon and his team spent six weeks stripping the interior bare to meet Kanye’s vision.
Work on the mansion began without any permissions. Contractor Tony Saxon undertook the remodelling according to Kanye West’s plans. This involved removing the ocean-facing windows, kitchen, marble-clad bathrooms, concrete hot tub, indoor fireplace with its stainless steel chimney pipes, light fixtures, heating, and air conditioning, and disconnecting the power and water.
As a result, the mansion now lacks electricity and running water, and its value has decreased. Currently, the property is up for sale, but despite a $14 million price reduction, no interested buyers have been reported.
The mansion stood as an iconic structure designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando in Malibu, representing his minimalist and innovative design style. It harmoniously blurred the separation between the indoors and outdoors by respecting the natural light and the oceanic views, enhancing the built environment.
Today, the mansion is just a shadow of its former self. It has been robbed of even basic features such as doors, windows, bathrooms, plumbing, and electricity, denying it to be a dwelling unit. The mansion has lost its charm and identity, standing like a disrobed body, bereft of meaning.
Kanye West’s intentions may have been to repurpose the space according to his vision and to explore its potential. As the owner of the property, he apparently had the freedom to do as he pleased with it. He attempted to implement his plans and perhaps sought to find his own architectural style. However, whatever his reasons, he left the project halfway. Is his approach justified?
Upon considering the possible motivations behind his actions, one might wonder whether it was valid for him to dismantle the mansion and leave it in disrepair. It was NOT. Even without malicious intent, it was wrong to strip life from an iconic structure designed by a renowned architect and leave it to decay.
Even if his repurposing plans did not succeed, he should have respected the mansion’s significance before putting it up for sale.
The mansion exemplifies Tadao Ando’s philosophy of creating spaces that evoke emotional responses and deeply connect with their surroundings. The ambiance he crafted made the space serene and calming. As the intellectual property of a renowned architect, the mansion was highly valued and appreciated in its prime. But to barge into the property and destroy its life, value, and significance was a very disturbing step. The mansion was an iconic marvel with dignity and value, which Kanye West exploited through his actions. This structure deserved to be treated with respect.
Today, even in its dilapidated state, it is still remembered as a profoundly impactful work in the architecture industry.
