I’ve spent years researching and analysing the solar industry, and one question that often crops up is: which country manufactures the best solar panels?

In this article, I’ll explore the top contenders and examine what sets them apart in the competitive world of solar panel manufacturing.

China dominates the global solar panel manufacturing landscape, accounting for over 80% of worldwide production capacity. Since 2008, China’s been the largest manufacturer of solar panels, with seven out of the top ten manufacturers based in the country.

China’s solar industry began by producing panels for satellites before transitioning to domestic use in the late 1990s. In 2011, the Chinese government introduced substantial incentives, leading to a dramatic growth in the country’s solar power market. 

By 2013, China had become the world’s leading installer of photovoltaics.

The scale of China’s investment in solar panel manufacturing is staggering. Since 2011, China’s invested over $50 billion in new photovoltaic (PV) supply capacity. To put this in perspective, that’s ten times more than the entire continent of Europe invested in the same industry during the same period.

Countries Dominating Solar Panel Production

The global solar panel manufacturing landscape is dominated by a few key players, with China leading the pack. 

Here’s a closer look at the countries that are shaping the solar industry through their manufacturing prowess.

China’s Solar Manufacturing Powerhouse

China’s dominance in solar panel production is unparalleled. The country controls over 80% of the global solar panel supply chain, having invested more than £40 billion in new photovoltaic (PV) supply capacity since 2011. 

This investment is ten times greater than Europe’s, cementing China’s position as the world’s largest producer of solar energy. Chinese manufacturers’ share in all stages of solar panel production exceeds 80%, showcasing their comprehensive control over the industry.

Rising Competition from Other Asian Nations

While China leads the pack, other Asian countries are making significant strides in solar panel manufacturing:

  • Japan: Ranking third globally in solar panel production, Japan boasts a cumulative capacity of 84.9 GW. It’s considered the fastest-growing country in promoting solar PV, with Japanese manufacturers producing 45% of the world’s photovoltaic cells.
  • South Korea: Known for its technological prowess, South Korea is emerging as a key player in high-efficiency solar panel production.
  • India: With its ambitious renewable energy goals, India is rapidly expanding its solar manufacturing capabilities to meet domestic demand and become a global exporter.

North American Solar Panel Manufacturing

The United States stands as the second-largest producer of solar panels globally, with a cumulative capacity of 141.8 GW. The American solar industry has experienced remarkable growth, with solar jobs increasing by 167%. This growth is driven by:

  1. Government incentives and policies promoting renewable energy
  2. Increasing consumer demand for clean energy solutions
  3. Technological advancements in solar panel efficiency and cost-effectiveness

Canada is also making strides in solar panel manufacturing, focusing on high-quality, cold climate-resistant panels suited for North American weather conditions.

Emerging Markets and New Players

India, for instance, has ambitious plans to boost its domestic solar manufacturing capacity. The country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative aims to increase solar panel production from 3 GW to 36 GW by 2025. Similarly, Vietnam and Malaysia are rapidly expanding their solar manufacturing capabilities, attracting investments from both domestic and international companies.

In Africa, countries like Morocco and South Africa are making strides in solar panel production. Morocco’s Noor Solar Complex, one of the world’s largest solar installations, has spurred local manufacturing efforts. These emerging markets are likely to challenge China’s dominance in the future, offering more diverse options for solar panel sourcing.
