The vision for the shelter was clear: create a nurturing environment that would not only prioritize the health and comfort of the animals but also boost the morale of the staff and welcome visitors, encouraging interactions and facilitating adoptions. The design of the new center needed to reflect these priorities, creating a space where animals could thrive, staff could work efficiently and happily visitors could feel at ease and connected with the animals.

To achieve these goals, the design of the facility was meticulously planned. Its exterior and interior were crafted to include features such as indoor cat condos, dog play yards a courtyard for visitors to bond with potential pets. The inclusion of a heated and ventilated drive-thru for animal transfer underscored the commitment to animal comfort and safety.

The interior was organized into zones dedicated to office work, laundry, medical services, recovery, grooming quarantine, ensuring operational efficiency and comprehensive care. A pivotal design strategy was the integration of natural light, accomplished through a partnership with Quorum Architects and NTX Building Products, using Solatube’s Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs). These devices are cost-effective, energy-efficient eco-friendly, designed to distribute daylight evenly without the drawbacks of traditional skylights.

The strategic use of natural light is grounded in research, such as the 2013 study by Heemstra, highlighting its importance in enhancing the well-being of shelter animals and supporting successful adoptions. Daylight helps regulate circadian rhythms, boosts mood by increasing serotonin levels reduces stress and anxiety. This serene environment allows animals to show their true personalities, making them more appealing to potential adopters. Furthermore, natural light enhances the physical appearance of animals, making them more attractive to visitors.
