Northeast of Kyiv, in north-central Ukraine, is the city of Chernihiv, also known as Russian Chernigov. Although Chernihiv was first referenced in 907, archaeology points to a 7th-century origin. It served as the capital of a princedom and one of the major towns of Kievan Rus. The Transfiguration Cathedral there was built in 1036. Following the Tatar invasion, Chernihiv lost its prominence and became a small regional centre until the modern era.
