Around 5000 BC, during the Neolithic era, the Linear Pottery Culture marked the beginning of the earliest documented permanent settlement of the region. The Celtic Boii tribe established the first notable colony in 200 BC. It was a fortified town called an oppidum. They also constructed a mint, which produced biatec silver coins. From the first to the fourth century AD, the region was ruled by the Romans, and it became a part of the Danubian Limes, a border defence system. Romans brought grape cultivation to the region and started a winemaking culture that is still practised today.
