Following the Islamic conquest in 711, Seville, then known as Ishbiliyah, became the capital of the independent Taifa of Seville after the Caliphate of Córdoba fell in the early 11th century. After that, it was ruled by the Almoravids and the Almohads until it was incorporated into the Crown of Castile in 1248. Seville developed as one of the most significant towns in Western Europe in the 16th century due to its function as the entry point for the transatlantic trade of the Spanish Empire, which was handled from the Casa de Contratación.
