Yekaterina, the Russian form of her name, was the wife of the Russian monarch Peter the Great, who became Catherine after his death. Yekaterinburg was established on November 18, 1723, and was given that name. The city functioned as the Russian Empire’s mining capital and a vital strategic link between Europe and Asia. Yekaterinburg was made a district town of the Perm Province in 1781 by Catherine the Great, who also laid the ancient Siberian Route through the city. Yekaterinburg rose to prominence in Siberia, a region with abundant resources. Yekaterinburg emerged as one of the Urals’ revolutionary movement hubs in the late 19th century. After the Russian SFSR joined the Soviet Union and established itself as a socialist nation in 1924.
