The architectural environment of Oklahoma has a rich and diverse history. Most architectural styles and trends have been found in the state of Oklahoma’s geographical area, ranging from indigenous Native groups who built their own kinds of habitation to modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers of the twenty-first century. On the Canadian and Arkansas Rivers in eastern Oklahoma, French adventurer La Harpe waved his flag over the beehive grass huts of Wichita Indian towns in the 1700s. He was unaware of the fall of a culture whose people had lived in permanent villages for a millennium two hundred years before. Mississippian mound builders built earth mounds over forty feet tall to serve as platforms for dwellings, celebrations, and graves. Spiro Mounds were not discovered in the Poteau River Valley until the 1920s when a small group of ignorant locals known as the Pocola Mine Company went on a random search for treasure with shovels and black powder.
