Archaeological discoveries point to the lengthy history of cultures in the region. In the sixth and seventh centuries, a collection of communities began to take shape on the future site of Lublin and its surroundings. On Czwartek (“Thursday”) Hill, in the heart of modern-day Lublin, remnants of villages from the sixth century were found. The early Middle Ages were characterized by increased habitation, especially in locations along river basins. The stronghold on Old Town Hill, which was probably one of the Lendians tribe’s principal centres, served as the focal point for the settlements. The centre moved to the northeast, to a new stronghold above Czechówka valley, then, after the middle of the 12th century, to Castle Hill after the tribal stronghold was destroyed in the tenth century. It is assumed that Lublin had two or more churches throughout the early medieval era. One of them was most likely built on Czwartek Hill in the 11th century under the authority of Casimir the Restorer.
