The Skopje region has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC, and Neolithic village relics have been discovered inside the former Kale Fortress, which overlooks the present-day city center. Scupi, formerly a Paeonian city, was elevated to become Dardania’s capital in the second century BC. The Romans took over the community on the eve of the first century AD, and it was turned into a military camp. Scupi came under Byzantine administration after the Roman Empire was split into its eastern and western sections in 395 AD. The town was contested for much of the early medieval era by the Byzantine Empire and the Bulgarian Empire, whose capital it served between 972 and 992.
