During the Sangam period, Tiruppur was a part of the Kongu Nadu area, governed by the Cheras. The area was connected to India’s east and west coasts by a significant Roman commerce route. In the tenth century CE, the Cholas of the mediaeval era invaded Kongu Nadu. Chola stone carvings reference the fertile sand that the Kanchi Maanadhi (Noyyal River) deposited on its banks. By the 15th century, the area was dominated by the Vijayanagara Empire, and later Palayakkarars, the chieftains of the Madurai Nayaks, took over. Following a series of conflicts with the Madurai Nayak Dynasty, the area was ruled by the Kingdom of Mysore in the latter half of the 18th century.
