The earliest settlement, or oppidum, was probably established in the fifth century BC by the ancient Ligures, who gave the contemporary area of Liguria its name. It was located at the top of the hill known as Castello (Castle), which is now a part of the medieval old town. Given its robust economic character at the time, the Genoese town, which was home to the “Genuati” (a group of Ligure peoples), was referred to as “the emporium of the Ligurians.”
