One of Spain‘s oldest cities, Valencia, was established during the Roman era, roughly 138 BC, under the name “Valentia Edetanorum.” A few centuries later, the Catholic Church took control of the city, filling the power vacuum created by the fall of the Roman imperial authority and co-occurring as the first waves of Germanic invaders (Suevi, Vandals and Alans, and later the Visigoths). Around 714 AD, the city gave over to the Arab and Berber invaders known as the Moors. By 788–789, Abd al-Rahman I had destroyed the old city of Valencia. After that, Valencia (also known as Balansiya in Arabic) refers to a larger region rather than a specific city. This suggests that the city, also known as Madînat al-Turâb, had a declining status throughout the period.
