The fortification that Ivan the Terrible had erected on the city’s location is the city’s founding year, having been constructed in 1574. When the Ufa Governorate broke away from the Orenburg Governorate in 1865, Ufa was designated as its capital. The early 20th century saw an increase in Ufa’s population. The paleolithic era is when the region around Ufa first began to exist. On the site of Ufa, there was probably a medieval city between the fifth and sixteenth centuries. A town roughly on the Belaya River was labeled Pascherti (Bashkort) on the Pizzigano brothers’ map (1367) and the Catalan Atlas (1375). Gerardus Mercator’s map (1554) also indicated the settlement with the Pascherti name.
