On Monastyrskyi Island, a monastery was established by Byzantine monks presumably in the ninth century (870 AD). In 1240, the Tatars destroyed the monastery. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania expelled the Tatar tribes living on the right bank of the Dnieper at the beginning of the 15th century. The Crimean Khanate and the Nogai, who lived north of the Sea of Azov, occupied these areas by the middle of the 15th century. The Crimean Khanate and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania agreed to a border that would run through what is now the city of Dnipro and farther east along the Samara River (Dnieper). The free people, or Cossacks, first arrived during this period. They later acquired the name Zaporozhian Cossacks, which means “The Land Beyond the Weirs [Rapids]” in Zaporizhia, south of Prydniprovye. Raids and fighting during this period left significant destruction and population loss in that region. The Wild Fields was the name given to the region.
