George M. Johnson founded Wayne in 1824 when he built a two-room log cabin on the ancient “Chicago Road,” today Michigan Avenue. Ezra Derby, the man who is credited with creating Wayne, began subdividing land and establishing a cemetery and mills along the Rouge River’s lower branch. General Anthony Wayne, under whose command an early resident had served in the army, was the inspiration for the town’s name. Wayne was mostly a farmland community until 1888 when the Prouty and Glass Carriage Company of Detroit opened. Wayne became Western Wayne County’s commercial centre due to the railroad and manufacturing.
