Around 2,000 years ago, the Gabrieleo indigenous people lived in Irvine. In 1769, a Spanish explorer named Gaspar de Portolà arrived in the area, and forts, missions, and cattle herds were established. The King of Spain divided territory between missions and private individuals. The Mexican government secularized the missions and took ownership of the lands following Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821. It started giving land to Mexicans who applied for grants. Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin, and Rancho Lomas de Santiago were the three substantial Spanish/Mexican grants that eventually comprised the Irvine Ranch.
