The Lincoln Memorial is a national memorial in the United States dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. It is a neoclassical temple located on the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., across from the Washington Monument. Henry Bacon was the memorial’s designer. Daniel Chester French designed the memorial’s huge central figure, Abraham Lincoln (1920), and the Piccirilli brothers carved the Lincoln statue. The inside paintings were painted by Jules Guerin, while Royal Cortissoz wrote the epitaph over the monument. It is one of several memorials created to honour an American president and was dedicated in May 1922.
