The Saura, a Siouan-speaking tribe, lived in the area that became Greensboro at the time of European contact. 7 For thousands of years, other indigenous civilizations had lived in this area, generally dwelling near the streams as did the early settlers. Around 1750, Quaker colonists from Pennsylvania came to Capefair (now Greensboro) via Maryland. In 1751, the new immigrants in Snow Camp began holding organized religious services linked with the Cane Creek Friends Meeting. After three years, 40 Quaker families were permitted to form the New Garden Monthly Meeting. “To Friends at New Garden in Capefair,” signed by Joseph Ratliff, is recorded in the minutes of the Perquimans and Little River Quarterly Meeting on May 25, 1754. Over the next three years, the town flourished swiftly, attracting members from as far away as Nantucket, Massachusetts. It quickly grew to be North Carolina’s most important Quaker community and the birthplace of several additional Quaker meetings across the state and west of the Appalachians.
