The Hopewell Native Americans lived in the area some 2,000 years ago, according to burial mounds in what is now Indian Mounds Park. The Mdewakanton Dakota, a Sioux tribe, resided among the mounds from the early 17th century to 1837 after being forced from their ancestral territory by Mille Lacs Lake and advancing Ojibwe. Because of the exposed white sandstone cliffs on the river’s eastern side, the Dakota named the location Imniza-Ska (“white cliffs”). The Imniza-Ska has plenty of caves that the Dakota could exploit. In 1767, the explorer Jonathan Carver photographed the old Wakan tipi on the bluff under the burial mounds.
