The Huchiun people were the first known occupants, having lived there for thousands of years. The Huchiun were part of a language group known as the Ohlone (a Miwok word meaning “western people”). They were centred in Oakland around Lake Merritt and Temescal Creek, which flows into the San Francisco Bay in Emeryville. In 1772, Spanish settlers colonized the territory that would become Oakland and the rest of California for the King of Spain. The Spanish crown granted the East Bay area to Luis Mara Peralta for his Rancho San Antonio in the early 1800s. The new Mexican republic confirmed the award when Mexico gained independence from Spain. Peralta distributed his farm to his four sons after his death in 1842. The majority of Oakland was divided between Antonio Maria and Vicente. Due to the vast oak forest that covered the area, the portion of the tract that is now Oakland was named Encinar (misgendered at an early period and carried forward as “Encinal”)—Spanish for “oak grove,” which eventually contributed to the city’s name.
