The area that would eventually become Port St. Lucie in Florida was primarily unpopulated in the 1950s. It consisted of a fishing camp (Burt Pruitt’s Fishin’ Farm) on the St. Lucie River, a few farms, and establishments close to U.S. 1. The General Development Corporation (GDC) bought the River Park subdivision and 40,000 acres (160 km2) along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River in 1958 for $5. Direct access by car to Port St. Lucie was made possible by the GDC’s opening of its first bridge over the St. Lucie River in 1959.
