Paleo-Indians, notably the Mound-builders culture, lived in locations near Detroit as early as 11,000 years ago. Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Iroquois peoples lived in the region in the seventeenth century. The Anishinaabe people call this region Waawiiyaataanong, which means “where the water curls around.” In the 1630s, French missionaries and traders worked their way around the League of the Iroquois and other Iroquoian tribes to reach the straits of Detroit. Until the 1650s, the Huron and Neutral peoples controlled the northern part of Lake Erie.
