Columbus was founded on the banks of the Scioto River by several Native American communities. Franklinton’s earliest European settlement was put out in 1797 and is today a city neighbourhood. The city was planned to become the state capital in 1812, near the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers. Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, inspired the city’s name. In 1816, the city became the state capital, and in 1824, it became the county seat. The town has seen multiple floods and recessions during its steady years of growth and industrialization. Columbus began to grow in the 1950s, and by the early 1990s, it had surpassed Cleveland as Ohio‘s largest city in terms of both acreage and population.
