Bielefeld is a city in the northwestern German state of North-Rhine–Westphalia. It is located on the northern outskirts of the Teutoburg Forest, which is mountainous. The old town, first mentioned as Bilifelde in Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn’s biography between 1015 and 1036, was most likely founded and chartered in 1214 by Count Hermann of Ravensberg; the “new town” arose from a religious settlement around the Neustädter Marienkirche (still standing) in the late 13th century. It became a member of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century, and it transferred to Jülich in 1346 and Brandenburg in 1647, together with the county of Ravensberg. Bielefeld, severely devastated during World War II, has since been rebuilt.
