Lentia was the name given to the city by the Romans when it was founded. Linz has first attested in the year 799 AD. It was a Holy Roman Empire provincial and local government city and a significant trading point connecting multiple routes from the east to the west, and from Bohemia and Poland in the north to the Balkans and Italy in the south, on both sides of the Danube. It was the most significant city in the empire for a short time because it was where Habsburg Emperor Friedrich III spent his final years. After the Emperor died in 1493, it lost its status to Vienna and Prague.
