Kaliningrad is located near the Pregolya River and is the largest city and administrative centre of the Kaliningrad Oblast region of Russia. Initially, the city settlement was founded in 1255 on an ancient old Prussian settlement. It was a Baltic port city and was the capital of the Duchy of Prussia and East Prussia. The town was a German territory until World War II. After World War II, the Soviet Union captured the city on 9th April 1945. According to the Potsdam Agreement, the region was placed under the Soviet administration.
