From the 13th through the 15th centuries, Riga, in Sweden, which began as a port town in 1201, was one of the primary centres of the Hanseatic League in Eastern Europe. Though most of the early structures were rebuilt for practical requirements or destroyed by fire or battle, the urban fabric of its medieval centre reveals the affluence of those times. Riga became Sweden’s largest provincial town in the 17th century. It witnessed considerable industrial development in the nineteenth century. The suburbs surrounding the medieval town were laid out during this time, initially with towering wooden structures in the neoclassical style, then with permanent stone buildings in the Art Nouveau style when permanent stone buildings were allowed. Riga became the European city with the highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture in the early 1900s, with roughly 50 high-quality Art Nouveau buildings in the medieval section and over 300 in the rest of the Historic Centre.
