Uijeongbu is located north of Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Its harmony with nature characterizes Korean conventional architecture. Ancient architects adopted the bracket system characterized by thatched roofs and heated floors called ondol. People of the upper classes had bigger houses with elegantly curved tiled roofs with lifting eaves. All over the history of Korea, various kingdoms and royal bloodlines have developed a unique style of architecture with impact from Buddhism and Korean Confucianism. In Korean architecture, buildings are constructed vertically and horizontally. A construction usually rises from a stone sub-foundation to a curved roof enclosed with tiles, held by a comforting structure and supported on posts; walls are made of earth or are occasionally totally composed of movable wooden doors. These architectural influences are also seen in the city of Uijeongbu. Architecture is built on the report to the kan unit, the width between two posts, and is created so that there is always a midway space between the inside and the outside.
