Toulon is an important centre in France for naval construction, winemaking, fishing, and the producer of armaments, aeronautical equipment, maps, paper, tobacco, printing, shoes, and electronic equipment. Archaeological excavations, such as Cosquer Cave near Marseille, show that the coast was inhabited since at least the Paleolithic era. The architectural heritage of Toulon, rich in more than 2000 years of history, holds many treasures, which arouse the interest of locals and passing visitors. A route through the city centre allows you to discover certain architectural monuments of the 20th century. Following the bombardments of 1944, the city of Toulon was declared a disaster city. The reconstruction procedure was applied. The urban architect Jean de Mailly proposed new construction techniques in line with the thinking of the Modern Movement in vogue.
