Torun is a city in northern Poland well known for its northern European architecture. The aesthetic character of the city is defined by Gothic architecture. The town has three major architectural elements: the Teutonic castle, the old town and the new town. The city has the form of a medieval settlement with excavated ruins and archaeological remains. The old town was a major commercial trading centre, and the new town was a centre for crafts and handiwork in the 1200s.
