Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest city in the region of Dalmatia. The town was founded as the Greek colony of Aspálathos in the 3rd or 2nd century B.C. on the coast of the Illyrian Dalmatae and was home to Diocletian’s Palace, built for the Roman emperor in AD 305. According to a popular theory, the city draws its name from the spiny broom, after which the Greek colony of Aspálathos or Spálathos was named. Although the beginnings of Split are traditionally associated with the construction of Diocletian’s Palace in 305, the city was founded several centuries earlier as the Greek colony of Aspálathos, or Spálathos.
