Morelia is the capital of the central Mexican state of Michoacán. The colonial city centre’s narrow streets are lined with well-preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings built from the region’s characteristic pink stone. One such building is the imposing, baroque-style Morelia Cathedral. Its elegant, soaring twin towers preside over the city’s main square, Plaza de Armas. In 1580, this rivalry ended in Valladolid’s favour, who hailed from the city. The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved colonial buildings and layout of the historic centre.
