Odessa is a port city on the northwest coast of the Black Sea. This is the third-largest city in Ukraine after Kyiv and Kharkiv. Odessa was founded in 1794 when the Russian Empress decided that the country needed a port on the Black Sea to expand ties with Europe. The place was once an ancient Greek settlement until the Ottoman Turks replaced them.
During the 19th century, it became the fourth largest city in imperial Russia. However, its architectural style is more influenced by the Mediterranean than the imperial Russian style. The city’s architecture takes its inspiration from French, Italian, Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles. At present, Odessa is a central transport hub and tourism centre.
