There is a city in southwest Spain called Badajoz. It’s known for its historic quarter of Moorish with the fortress-like Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. The Alcazaba of Badajoz is a Moorish citadel with verdant gardens and fortified walls. Badajoz is the see of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. It also encompasses the 12th-century Espantaperros Tower and the non-metropolitan Archaeological Museum. Statues of local cultural figures and Castelar Park feature palm trees. Before the merger of the Diocese of Badajoz and the Diocese of Mérida, Badajoz was the see of the Diocese of Badajoz from the bishopric’s inception in 1255.
