Lodz is the third-largest city in Poland and a former industrial center. Łódź is full of historic buildings, beautifully decorated townhouses, and manufacturers’ palaces. The city is based around one street – Piotrkowska now pedestrianized, is the heart of Łódź, with the northern half of the street connecting between Liberty Square and the Piotrkowska Centrum tram station is the most interesting site for visitors lining with shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. The other half connects around the idyllic Reymonta Park near the street’s south end.
Although the city retains an industrial base, like many cities in the post-industrial area, Lodz is reinventing itself, and regenerating, with a growing emphasis on the creative economy. Many of the old structures were renovated and refurbished into new buildings like The Poznański mill, which operated until the late 1990s, has now been converted into a center for the ‘creative industries known as Manufaktura comprising artists, designers, and architects studios, with rows of restaurants, fashionable boutiques, and hotel draw clientele from Łódź and elsewhere.
