Abuja is a planned commercial city, which was built in the 1980s. It officially became Nigeria’s capital in 1991, replacing Lagos, as the former city was congested, polluted, and didn’t have sufficient infrastructure.
The energy crisis of the 1970s was responsible in some ways for the new capital of Abuja. Nigeria came into considerable wealth at that time due to a hike in petroleum prices and the development of the Alaska pipeline. Nigeria was looking for a central place to develop a city where all people would be equally represented. The site of the capital should have a good climate, plenty of land, and abundant water. The city master plan concept defined the general structure and major design elements of the city and was patterned after Washington, D.C. for its design of public spaces. The central areas of the capital were designed and accomplished by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, his team of city planners at Kenzo Tange, and the Urtec company. Today the city has developed into a commercial center and is one of the fastest-growing cities of the African region with its Modern Nigerian Architecture.
