The SITH Villa is a residence designed for a family of four, located near Vellore on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway, surrounded by expansive agricultural landscapes. This villa integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings while redefining sustainable living in a modern context.

The linear site of the home presented unique design challenges, but also offered opportunities to create interconnected spaces that enhance the living experience. Our design strategy involved breaking the linearity by introducing open spaces between different structures, serving as transitional zones that blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. These spaces foster various activities, from quiet reading to vibrant social interactions, all while being bathed in natural light and cooled by breezes through brick jali walls. They are arranged to ensure privacy and openness where needed, creating a dynamic spatial experience as one moves through the house.
Sustainability was a core principle in the design of SITH Villa. The project features rammed earth walls, an ancient technique that aligns with contemporary sustainability goals by using local mud to create robust, thermally efficient walls. This reduces the need for artificial heating and cooling, minimizing the home’s carbon footprint. Other traditional methods, like rat-trap bonding in brick walls and the use of mud mortar, enhance insulation and resource efficiency. The staircase, built from recycled steel parts from automobiles, further emphasizes sustainability and waste reduction.
The choice of materials was driven by environmental impact and aesthetic contribution. Rammed earth and brick walls, combined with natural finishes, create a visually appealing, eco-friendly palette. Roofing solutions blend tradition and innovation, with Mangalore tiles and Mexican domes providing natural cooling and a unique architectural element. The first-floor bedrooms feature Rohtak domes, a traditional roofing method that distributes weight evenly and eliminates the need for concrete.
Inside, the villa features a mix of oxide finishes and leather-finished Kota stones, adding warmth and texture. Low window sills maximize natural light, enhancing comfort and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. The design creates a calming yet dynamic interior landscape that changes throughout the day, maintaining a connection with the surrounding agricultural landscape.
SITH Villa is a statement of thoughtful design and sustainable practices, blending traditional techniques with modern principles to create a functional and tranquil living environment. This residence stands as a model for future sustainable developments, showcasing the harmony between tradition and innovation.
