The Vision and Brief:

The genesis of The Zen Apartment was rooted in the desire to create a serene and inviting space for a newlywed couple embarking on their journey of togetherness. The clients, a discerning liquor business tycoon, sought to gift this apartment to his son and daughter-in- law as they embarked on this new phase of life. The couple, with their simple and minimalistic lifestyle, envisioned a home that reflected their values and provided the ideal backdrop for their future together.

Space and Location:

The Zen Apartment is situated in ‘Bakhtavar,’ an iconic art deco building in Colaba, Mumbai. With a carpet area spanning 2500 square feet, this apartment offers ample room for creative design and functional living. Its most captivating feature is the unobstructed sea view that serves as a constant reminder of the breathtaking beauty that Mumbai’s coastline has to offer.

Design Philosophy:

Atelier Varun Goyal’s design philosophy revolves around minimalism, contemporary aesthetics, and efficient space planning. The goal was to create a space that maximizes the connection with the sea view while promoting a sense of tranquility and simplicity.

Designing the Living Space:

Upon entering The Zen Apartment, one is immediately greeted by a wooden foyer adorned with intricate geometric wood and brass details. This sets the tone for what lies ahead – a harmonious blend of nature, luxury, and functionality.

To the right of the entrance, the living area unfolds with grace. A clear glass collapsible door seamlessly connects the living room to the balcony, erasing the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design choice not only enhances the living area but also invites the soothing sea breeze and natural light, creating an atmosphere of calm and openness. The living room features versatile seating arrangements and a flexible dining table that can adapt to various needs and moods.

The Bedrooms:

The Zen Apartment boasts two serene bedrooms designed for rest and relaxation. The master bedroom, strategically positioned to capture the mesmerizing sea view, offers a tranquil escape. The bed faces the vast ocean, inviting the gentle sounds of waves and the mesmerizing colors of the sea into the room. A beautifully designed dresser and a lavish attached toilet with separate cubicles for the WC and shower complete the master suite.

The second bedroom, a multi-functional space, serves as a study room with an attached toilet. Cleverly designed, it can easily transform into a guest room or a future children’s bedroom with the inclusion of a sofa-cum-bed. A quirky wooden wardrobe adds personality to the space.

The Dining Area and Kitchen:

The dining area seamlessly integrates with the living room, allowing for flexible dining arrangements while enjoying the sea view. The kitchen, equipped with modern appliances and functional storage, complements the overall design, making it a delightful space for culinary adventures.

Materials and Palette:

The color and material palette of The Zen Apartment were meticulously chosen to create a harmonious and serene atmosphere. The walls feature an all-white limewash finish using Mlime’s lime plaster, promoting a sense of purity and brightness. Reclaimed old teak wood and brass details adorn doors, windows, and wardrobes, infusing a touch of vintage charm into the contemporary design. The flooring is a striking terrazzo with wooden borders and skirtings, adding warmth and character to the space. Indian marble cladding in the washrooms imparts a touch of luxury and sophistication.

Lighting and Fixtures:

To infuse the space with art deco flair, lighting fixtures from Taherallys and Maroo Lights were thoughtfully incorporated. These fixtures enhance the ambiance with their distinctive designs, adding a touch of elegance and personality to each space.

Conclusion:

The Zen Apartment in Colaba, Mumbai, by Atelier Varun Goyal, is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. It seamlessly combines minimalist aesthetics, functional living, and a deep connection to nature, all while preserving the iconic art deco elements of its historic neighborhood. This is a space where simplicity meets luxury, and where the calming presence of the sea serves as a constant reminder of the beauty that surrounds us.
