This large courtyard garden in North London is truly an indoor-outdoor paradise. In our client’s multi-level townhouse, 3 outdoor spaces interconnect with views via huge sliding doors, skylights and windows.

There’s a 100-sqm shaded north-facing courtyard, a sunny south-facing large front garden & a roof terrace above the courtyard. Check out the before photos. After photos were taken 3 years after planting.
The giant 1.2m-square white tiles continue from the open-plan kitchen into the courtyard on the same level, doubling the feeling of space, enhancing ergonomics and increasing light levels for the plants in the shaded aspect. The key focal point is a raised bed at the back, planted with architectural plants, featuring a 6m-long cantilevered hardwood bench which provides comfy seating and is dramatically amplified at night with LED cavity lighting beneath.
New Zealand and Mediterranean species feature extensively in the courtyard, where their evergreen qualities provide privacy from the neighbours – the main request in the clients’ brief. On the rooftop, Cordyline, Pittosporum, Trochodendron and Ferns provide a highly textural medley, blending into the view towards the house.
As the courtyard is tiled edge to edge, we designed bespoke powder-coated troughs to grow tall Bamboo and Magnolia trees on the right and left. This technique was borrowed from our roof garden projects. The plant palette includes Magnolia, Bamboo, Cordyline, Chamaerops, Arbutus, Fatsia, Olea, Phormium & Hoheria (Ribbonwood from New Zealand).
