On the 7th floor of Bridge House, St George Wharf, above Vauxhall Bridge, this large 220-sqm roof garden is a spacious, architectural outdoor space. Photos: Timothy Soar. Using an external furniture lift, we hoisted up all materials & plants over 3 months.

The symmetrical, curvilinear design follows the nautical theme of the building’s architecture, echoed in turquoise tones as well.

2 capacious curved raised beds, each planted with a trio of stately Agave plants, flank the wide steps which lead to the upper deck. Mediterranean plants sway in the strong breeze and sunlight, coping with incessant pollution too. A seating area by the kitchen benefits from a hedge windbreak, stepping in height to reveal vistas of Battersea Power Station. To the right, views of London Eye, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and Millbank Tower are underscored by low grasses, Yucca and herbs.

The main deck is edged in Blanc de Bierges pavers, continuing into the middle section. We selected Iroko hardwood for its warm tones and durability. The deck boards vary in width to add rhythm and interest, contrasted by the pale colours of the raised bed’s cladding.

A golf putting green on the upper section satisfies our client’s sporting passion, although we have since ceased using this material and only specify sustainable materials. Irrigation & lighting make this a highly sociable and low-maintenance roof garden.
